Like 20+ million other Americans, I buy health insurance for myself.

I wonder what will happen if Obamacare is repealed? Will I lose health insurance next year? I also wonder if I will be able to afford health insurance in the future. Premiums keep going up. Deductibles keep going up. Prescription drugs and cost-sharing for health related services are going up as well. Out of pocket expenses are ridiculously high! Did you know that in the US we pay 2-3 times more for our health care than other industrial nations and we get worse outcomes? Sad but true.

Today, the US Senate has voted to begin dismantling Obamacare.

Lots of people do not like Obamacare. Whether we like it or not, it does save lives! Before we had Obamacare, it was reported that one American died every 24 minutes due to lack of health insurance. What happens if Obamacare is repealed? Well, perhaps more Americans dying every day … again. Interesting that more people are enrolling in Obamacare in 2017 than in 2016! Clearly, people want health insurance if they are signing up!

There are two things we can do right now:

1. Write your elected officials in Washington DC.

We do not want to lose our health insurance. Most people do not want Obamacare repealed. Most voters want affordable care. People want to keep their doctors and not have to change every year. People want easy to understand health insurance. We do not want a gap of confusion between the government repealing the law and not replacing it with another plan. Write your elected officials today and let them know what you want before they vote again on January 27. (The Senate voted at 1:30 AM today; the House will vote Friday 1/13/2017. The next vote could be as soon as January 27, 2017).

2. Take care of ourselves with a healthy lifestyle.

If Obamacare is repealed, I wonder if everyone in my extended family, neighborhood, community, city, or country will have affordable, decent health care in the future  This is out of our control. Instead of relying on our traditional health care, which is sickness oriented, why not invest our energy into wellness care?! We can do it! We *do* have some control over our genetics. We can do the best we can to take care of ourselves with a healthy lifestyle with fewer medications, as I have discussed many times throughout my video series and blog, here, here, and here.

Dr. Dean Ornish tells us that “More than 86% of the $3 trillion in annual U.S. health care costs (which are really predominantly sick-care costs) are from chronic diseases which can often be prevented and even reversed by making healthier diet and lifestyle choices, at a fraction of the costs—and the only side-effects are good ones”. This is our new mantra!

We do have some power and control, in our daily choices, to take charge of many of our health outcomes. It is not hard. It takes some planning and decision making. Many people have changed their lives. We did back in 2005. You can too! Give it a try, what have you got to lose but poor health, excess stress, and weight? Sign up today and take the risk of feeling fabulous!
